Under the direct supervision of the Transportation Director, incumbent will oversee the day-to-day activities of the bus drivers in the school district and ensure that the buses are clean and well maintained as well as operated in a safe and efficient manner.  In addition to this oversight responsibility, incumbent will drive regular bus route and/or substitute for regular drivers and do related work as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Assist in assigning drivers to routes; relay route assignments and other pertinent instructions to drivers.
  • Assist and coordinate emergency evacuation drills twice a year, at minimum provide other safety training intermittently each school year.
  • Assist in planning and executing an in-service safety training program to provide refresher course.
  • Assist the mechanic in performing inspections of school buses frequently.
  • Inspect all buses for cleanliness and appearance and may check basic fluids, such as oil, water, transmission fluid, window washer fluid, if required.
  • Instruct bus drivers on the use/care of equipment in order to ensure driver compliance in such areas as bus cleanliness, proper street crossings, bus stop locations and other related activities and train new employees, behind the wheel training for new bus drivers.
  • Maintain training records and evaluate all driver bi-annually.
  • Maintain, either manually or through automated system, simple records such as mileage, gas consumption, maintenance records, attendance, etc.
  • Prepare simple reports on driver activities on a monthly basis or as required by district. policy; submit the daily CDL Pre-trip check list, Daily mileage report, Bus Conduct Report, upon completing forms for record and accountability.  Files and record keeping all driver certifications and training.
  • May perform dispatching duties requiring the operation of two-way radio.
  • May provide input to supervisor for staff evaluations.
  • May conduct yearly road tests of bus drivers as required by law.
  • Follow up on and respond to complaints, as needed.
  • Must be able to administer First-Aid, CPR & AED when necessary.
  • Provide input and assistance to Supervisor for preparation of the department budget, planning for department, seeking and completing financial opportunities.
  • Perform other assignments as directed by the Transportation Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position assists with the management and evaluation of drivers and clerical staff assigned in area.  Will assume delegation when in absence of Transportation Director,

Qualification & Education and/or Experience

  • At minimum six (06) years of progressive and satisfactory experience in supervision, bus driving, operating heavy equipment or other familiar training in the operation and management of transportation.
  • Demonstrate competence when assigned duties.
  • Must pass a physical examination and other requirements as set forth by National, State and local laws.
  • Possess a current and valid Arizona Commercial Drivers licence, “P”, and a certificate for bus driver, Bus Driver Instructor, 3rd Party Tester, Defensive Driver Instructor, First-Aid, CPR, AED certifications.
  • The appointing authority is responsible for verifying and ensuring that the candidate meets this condition at time of appointment and throughout the course of their employment.


  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills dealing with a diverse range of people.

  • Ability to manage a flexible work schedule including being available to assist with or resolve issues at sites during events as needed.
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in using a computer, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and internet.
  • Knowledge of basic budgeting, accounting principles, and record keeping procedures.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as instructions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to employees of the organization, community groups, vendors, and to the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Valid CDL B, “P”
  • Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Class One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Working Hours

This position requires working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; and may require travel to supervise or investigate complaints regarding events/activities.

Travel is frequent in the local area.

Performance of this job will be evaluated twice each school year in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
